Cement block small evaporator

Built a 3 x 5 block evaporator and lined with fire brick. I used masonary cement for the blocks, but just set the fire brick in on top of each other. I got a lot of cracking in the blocks and need to know if I should cement the fire brick or how to stop the blocks from cracking.

An air gap between the block and fire brick would help. Or insulation.
