Small operation (hobby84 taps) new to tubing. Installed 3/16 tubing this season to replace some buckets. First run 225' 17 taps 30' drop tapped late yesterday 24 hours later temp 38F gauge reads 20.4 in. of vac. two short runs 130' with about a 6' drop to the tank with 10 taps and 13 taps gauges read 5.3 and 5.08 just wondering if this is the vacuum numbers I should expect? Are they good? I am happy, but don't know since we never had tubing. Thanks for your input.

you're getting about the max vacuum for the 6' drop lines. you'll get about .88" per ft. 6x.88 = 5.28

you have a leak on the 30' drop line. or you don't have 30' of elevation loss. theoretical max is 26.4" on 30' of drop.

last year i was obsessed with vacuum (and still am to some degree). but ANY vacuum is better than no vacuum.

Wow, thanks for the math its very helpful to me. Maybe it is less than a 30' loss my method of measuring is pretty crude I see you are in Danbury we are due west of Danbury 8 miles south of Rt 84 on the west side of the Hudson river.

Thanks Again, George

As I understand it, natural gasses in the tree can prevent getting max theoretical vacuum?

The OP would see a lot of bubbles in the lines that may not be caused by leaks, but would impact the vacuum?

While it's true the natural gases may not give maximum vacuum with 30' drop, with a few more feet drop you can get the maximum for your location.

i have no analytical proof, but my guess would be that, as long as you have at least 30' of sap in the entire column, the bubbles wouldn't effect vacuum. that's just a hunch though.

Thanks Again, GeorgeHow's the sap running? 'I've been running for 30 hours and still going. hope it goes another 12-18 hours.
