I've been using a small piece of roofing but does anyone have a better idea on covering my pan between boils? I don't empty it out between boils.

I had some cheap covers made and still use them today. Because they need to withstand heat and moisture I used 18 gauge Aluminum. Now mine have a double lip bent into the edges so it fits down in. In reality it would have been better if it was as simple as a 90 degree bend to help stiffen them and make a better seal. It is a nice addition to help keep the crap and critters out at night.

When we had a 2' X 4' under a leanto, we did something similar to what Haynes described. The only difference we did was to attach the aluminum to a piece of 3/4" plywood by bending the edges up and over the edge of the plywood. We then some one inch aluminum angle pieces attached to the top of the plywood to keep the piece from sliding off the pan. The plywood gave the aluminum enough weight so the wind couldn't blow it off.

For my old 2x4 flat pan I used outside I bent up a cover out of raw aluminum I bought at the hardware store. Two 3'x3' pieces I think. I bent a back to back hem to connect them together in the middle to reduce leaks. A brick on each corner to hold it down, and it went through some major wind storms over the years.
