I've learned this year that if in a bind and need to fix a leak, the 3/16 tubing will slide inside of the 5/16 rather tightly with no vac leak. I've also seen it hold tension, especially wrapped in electrical tape.......
Also have a section of 3/4 black mainline I slid inside of 1" CDL blue about a foot, double clamped it and electrical tape the joint for extra comfort- the bush runs 27"!!!! A Dollar here and there adds up.

How long of a piece of 5/16 would you use, around 8"?

I was referring about slipping the 3/16 inside the 5/16 at drop lines and leaving the 5/16 as my main line, because the squirrels where chewing it and this line was not a lot of drop so I left the 5/16 up,I only have 3/16 taps now.I could only get it in about a inch or so,so far the ice didn't force it apart but i can see this line all the time to check on it.

I also have found about an inch is all you can push it in, I usually wet it with mouth first. I have seen it last thru the season so far......so to answer the question a 2-3 inch piece of 5/16 will be plenty. I always can find a piece of this in the wood somewhere
