I know it's early, but I put in my 20 taps Saturday morning and by Sunday I had 15 gallons of sap.

Tapped 18 sugars and 2 large reds. The 2 red maples gave me less than half a gallon of sap total. Should I keep the taps on the reds or move it to another sugar maple?

Three sugar maples close to my creek gave me over 2 gallons each while others were hit and miss.

I would keep them in. Those Reds are probably in a colder spot and not thawed out like the sugars by the creek.

20 More taps are in for a total of 40.

35 sugar maples and 5 red or silvers. I have a Hydrometer on its way to check the sap for sugar content. I have some thinning to do in a few areas and I will be testing to help decide which ones to keep.

The forecast has the daytime highs above freezing every day for the next 14 days. Should have a good run. I collected about 30 gallons from the past 2 days. Half the trees are running great and the other half have not thawed.

Got my refractometer yesterday and checked and I am averaging 2.5%. The yard trees are running 3.5%, reds are right around 2% the rest of the sugars are right around 2.5%. I plan on checking individual trees this weekend.

Would it be bad to pull a tap from a low producing tree and move it to another one mid season? Does anyone use an awl to check trees that are not tapped.

Got 20 More gallons of sap today. Sugar content was a little lower. 2.5% from the yard/field maples, everything else averaged 2% with the reds running under 2 and the sugars just over 2%.

Should be a good boil this weekend.

Sap was not running today. Too cold today or too warm yesterday?
Just about every tap was dry or had 1/8 cup of sap.

Below freezing now, hopefully it recharges the trees.

Boiled my sap today. Ended up just shy of a gallon and a half. It was too cold again today and nothing was running. Next week looks good.

Collected 50 gallons today. Running 2%
Should have had more but many of my 1 gallon jugs got knocked over in the wind.

20 More gallons today. Large ones finally started running, but the small ones stopped. Need another freeze to recharge them.

Hung 23 buckets after work last night and most were running good. Got another 55 buckets to hang tonight after work.

Made another gallon and a half today. Most trees are not running today.

I have one larger sugar maple that has given less than half a gallon of sap in the past few weeks. What's is odd is that when I tested the sap today it was over 4%. Any idea why it won't give any sap? Tap is in clean white wood. Every other tree is running including much larger ones.

Taps stopped running with the cold and snow. I have around 60 gallons to boil tomorrow from this week.

All of my sap is frozen solid in the sap sacks. It doesn't look like they will thaw before the weekend. This next boil will be my last this year. I am almost out of wood and have almost 7 gallons of syrup.
Next year I want to run tubing and upgrade from chafing pans to a 2x4 or 2x6.

Never thought it possible, but this could be the year that we do not boil in March. Nothing but dry taps and some frozen sap from trees on the southern edges since end of Feb. Our sugarbush is at 1,700 ft and it appears only those at lower elevation and in the valleys have had sap flow.

Outside Marathon NY @ 1800FT and winter has returned this March. 100 taps Valentines day, gravity fed w/ 5/16 lines, 3 boils and 10gal of quality syrup YTD.

I've seen some sugar shacks in the valley steam free, I sit at a pretty high elevation and still have crystal clear sap. Just wondering if people are pulling taps this week or holding off till the last drop. Don't want to waste time and end up with buddy syrup even though trees look pretty bare.

We are right between Greene and Bainbridge, and are still getting good sap, I'm hoping the rain that moves in later today/tonight loosens things up, we haven't boiled in a week, we did lose all our small roadside lines, but our 3 main bushes are holding their own, I plan on being done on Sunday, but that's what I said 2 weeks ago lol

I pulled my buckets Monday and called it quits. They were still running clear in Deposit this week.
