Next step: finish this up (brick/chimney/pan) then slap in 150 taps! 75 on buckets/pails, 75 on (new) gravity system.

Great fab work on the arch! What set of pans do you have for it?

Chris

What are you using for a grate?

What are you using for a grate?
We had some old steel “walkway/floor” type grating donated. It’s not really heavy but supported it with brick so hopefully won’t sag. Will likely upgrade in future

Wow that is a GREAT job it will work very well! I used the Dave Jones plans 7 years ago and its still going strong. Here is my 2 cents I had grate just like that in mine and it melted in well, less than two seasons. now I have storm drain grate cover but it was a little hard to cut to size (cast iron) also I installed a 1 1/4" piece of flat stock along the front between the top of the door and the top of the rail. This keeps any puff of smoke or sut or flame from messing up the front of your pan if for any reason you get a little puff back when you are putting wood in. It works very well.
Good Luck, You Are a Craftsman George

That's what I used last year and was surprised that it barely lasted the season

I also started with a grate like yours. Mine was from a storm drain and only lasted a few years. I made my new one out of angle iron V side up and filled with sand. It is now quite a few years old and in still in like new condition.

I've been really happy with my 7/8 inch rebar grate. It was cheap the local concrete products supplier here has a no cutting charge (most do not charge for cutting) and they sold me the rebar cut to size for the typical per foot amount I just mounted it welded only on one side for expansion in two angle iron supports with holes to fit torched out. I remember it was cheaper than angle iron per foot. Jay
