The trees I'm tapping are in a neighborhood (the town gave home owners a sugar maple for their lot back in the 60s and 70s) and one my maple trees has a large limb that was recently cut (24"+ diameter tree with an 8" limb that has cut). The sap is running out of the limb that was cut and I'm wondering if I should still tap the tree. Thoughts?

Ntater;
I tapped one 2 yrs ago like that and it was my #1 producing tree out of 30 I had tapped, but it was my first time tapping and I didn't know any better( tree still healthy so it's up to you)

Tap it. Trees are capable of losing 75% of their crown and still surviving (generalization i've heard from foresters). A 24" tree grown in a yard, as long as not stressed from other factors like root or salt damage, will be healthy and very resilient and a little taphole will not hurt it.

That's normally a 2 tap tree so I would put one tap in it.

An 8" limb being cut does about 100X the damage as 1 tap. I'd tap it with at least 1 tap and probably 2 if the cut limb was 15 feet or higher and I could still abide by the 6" and 20" guidelines (6" right or left of previous taps OR 20" higher or lower).

I would get a bucket under that limb scar ASAP. I'm thinking a Frisbee with a single tap in the center ducted taped to the end.

I would think that would would really reduce the internal pressure of the tree....... tap it!
