red dorakeen, thank you. The timber frame for my sugar shack is actually a timber frame from back in the 1800’s that was last used as a pig pen on a farm. There was a second floor on it originally but they were shorter then and I had to walk hunched over along the sides of the upstair so I made a dormer to give more head room. The plan is to use the upstairs to hold a permeate tank once I get a RO and a bed for late boils.

My picture is my avitar. Inside, with a 3x8 and a small RO closet I'm super crowded. Equipment just fills up more than I ever thought it would. When I built my 16x24 sugarhouse, it was for a 2x6, but I poured the evaporator footers to be able to have any evaporator up to a 3x10. I now have a 3x8 and that will be my largest, but the RO heated room, the filter press, the 2x6 finisher, the WJ bottler, the 2 freezers (to store retail syrup), the counters, a sink, a hot water heater and the 16x24 is crowded. Too late now for me, since I'm slowing down, but I wish I'd had the foresite to build a 24x36 sugarhouse.

Traced a maple leaf onto a piece of marine plywood and cut it out with a jigsaw. Slid a piece of glass behind it with a piece of red film stuck to it. I keep a small led light behind it 24/7. My wife is Canadian so its an homage to her as much as anything!

I dont have too many good interior pictures, however I have a 3x12 evaporator which is slight off center to the right with filtering and canning equipment on the left and a small sales counter in the front left. All my shelving is between the studs for product mainly in the front.

We just found some simple hinges at home depot and the latch is a latch for a fence. Nothing fancy. One side has just the handle.

I'm too computer illiterate to figure how to get photos from my e-mails or stored in the photo section of my Mac.
You'll just have to indulge me and read about it.
When we bought the property it came with a small barn where the owner kept three ponies. It has electric inside, and a yard hydrant just outside from my well.
In my first season for tapping trees I stole an idea from a Maple Trader member and built an 8x10 frame structure behind the barn, and covered it using a couple 12x16 blue tarps from Sam's Club.
I installed two ridge beams with one 1-foot higher than the other so I would have a "cupola" for steam to escape.
Lighting was provided by left-over clear LED christmas lights, which gave sufficient illumination and a bit of mood to the place.
Last year was my first season inside a 10x10 addition I built with rough cut Amish hemlock to match the original barn; 6/12 pitch roof using metal over exterior plywood to help eliminate some of the condensation rain; and cement board over the 2x6 wood floor to aid against stray sparks.
Since my evaporator sits on a marble slab placed on low 4" hollow cement blocks to keep it off the floor and still at the right height for my short height, I keep a "test stick" under the evaporator to make sure I'm not gonna set the floor on fire after cooking for 13+ hours at a time. So far the stick remains cool to touch --- so I'm sure the floor is good under the cement board.
I cut a doorway from the barn into this addition, so the barn still serves as my wood and sap storage --- as well as a place for my old TV and FM radio to reside.
The cupola is arranged so it isn't centered in the roof, but at the outer edge of the structure -- away from the barn.
Besides being great for steam escape, the height of the cupola also serves as a mounting point for the class 3 chimney without requiring guide wires or bracing for additional support.
I'll see if wifey can figure out how to include photos for me.
Since my dogs walked over the lumber as I built the place, they left foot prints on the wood.
We call this hobby "Muddy Paws Maple Company", with 50 taps being more than enough for now.
My evaporator has been the same since I started to collect sap -- a heavily modified 2-drawer lateral file cabinet with the top cut open and a removable frame on top that holds three full size 6" deep buffet pans.
This system is lined with fire brick and fire wool insulation, and incorporates an old fan that looks like a hair dryer for AUF on a rheostat that works really well.
Last year I used mostly aged hemlock cut ends from the local Amish mill to feed this beast. I barely had any ash left, and no creosote in the flue at all when I ran the brush through.
My friend built this evaporator for me, and truthfully it would have been better if I just turned him loose with his welder and all the supplies he has lying around without tying him to build around the file cabinet -- especially when it came to installing the brick.

Here are pictures of our first year's structure.
It is made from 2x4's and tarps, with space at the top to act as a cupola.
It was built behind a pony barn (no ponies) that serves as a good base of operations and storage.
The hearth and evaporator are modified from a lateral file cabinet with fire brick and wool, and a fireplace screen door (filled and insulated).
The hearth includes a fan that resembles a hand-held hair blower to provide AUF that works really well.
I tried to rotate the photos, but no luck. Sorry.

I'm sorry, but I have no idea how to rotate the photos.
You can see this stuff right-side-up in our gallery.
If you can rotate them for me, please do.
After getting the maple bug during my first year, I decided I didn't want to stand in mud any more an built the 10x10 addition shown in these photos.
I still use the pony barn as my base of operations, with the new addition only housing the evaporator.
Since our hearth is unconventional, I have the shack floor covered with cement board with metal flashing under each of the tight joints to eliminate any problems with a wayward spark.
The hearth sits on a slab of marble placed on 4" hollow cement blocks laid flat to allow air flow under the entire system.
On a side note - Instead of placing the hearth on a cement slab, the marble slab was wall material left over when rest rooms at the National Fire Academy were renovated and my friend bought the stuff as government surplus.
He said it's a symbol, making a nice transition from my former occupation into my retirement hobby.
It's great to have friends...

CBOYER,
That's a heck of a snow load on your roof.
I'd hate to be on the receiving end when your cooking warms the roof and.....
Did you have professional plans when you built the place, or just wing it drawn on the back of a Dunkin' Donut box like my friends do?
It looks great.

Wally,
You sure that's ONLY for making maple syrup, and not cooking off a bit of adult beverages?
I love the massive TV antenna and dart board -- in case you get bored.
By the way, your original post had a bit more wild life in them. ;)

Red,
Thank you. Most of the wood sourced from wind damaged trees and sawed on our Woodmizer mill. Even the Cottonwood table top came from a dead tree that was destined for the dump. Lots of fun at the sugar shack!

Karen,
Thank you. Comfortable building to be in. Too bad the season is so short.

There's a lot of nice sugar houses here. Now it's time for me to get in on the fun.

Some beautiful sugar shacks out there ! Wow...
Our little 12x16 gem for our little operation built a few years ago with leftover lumber from the land.
Snowmobile or snowshoe access only most years.
Will add a cupola and move the boiling inside eventually when I figure out
what to affordably evaporate on .
Early this season, the block arch in center is buried in 4' snow.
