I have a small steam hood for my 2 x 4 smoky lake hobby hybrid. I need to put a pipe on it.. can I use galvanized pipe? I only need to go 6 feet or so.
I would use aluminum over galvanized. Any drips coming back in the pan from the galvanized could contaminate the syrup.

I would use stainless.
8" or 10"? I have some 8" stainless I'm not using....
BTW, I test-fired my new 2x5 Smoky Lake / Badgerland rig yesterday. Amazing what that thing does over my old flat pan.
Aluminum has been used for steam stacks for a long time. It works fine and is less money than stainless. Unless you are going for the polished looks, it is a way to save money.

You should be able to have it made at a local sheet metal shop. I had them fab a custom steam hood and both stainless and aluminum stack.
Used to be most all the Maple Equipment companies sold it. I don’t know now if they still carry it.

I need to build a steam hood, How would galvanized contaminate the syrup? A lot of people use galvanized buckets to collect.
Just trying to learn here.

David,
Galvanized tanks, pans and buckets have (or are slowly) being phased out due to lead contamination of syrup and sap. You will be better off with aluminum or stainless, the latter being preferred.

And zink and who knows what else.

He can make any size you want, for 6' length, he will likely need to do it in 2 pieces. Another way is to get 6' or whatever length you need of 24" or even wider aluminum flashing. Then use 2 SS band type clamps, set them at the 6" or whatever diameter you want, then roll the flashing up slightly smaller that the 6" and slide one clamp a few inches on each end. The flashing will unroll to fill the clamp and it will make a good steam pipe. Alternatively, you could then use SS or aluminum pop rivets to hold it every foot, then remove the clamps. The tin shop may not want to do it while you wait and this method will make a good stack. Most hardware stores will cut flashing to length, you just need to find one with a wide enough width to give you some overlap. For that take the finished diam. x 3.14 + overlap.

I have two 8" stacks on my hood and bought all my stainless pipe from amazon. It was pretty cheap like sixty bucks for a 4' section.
