Normally, I check in to feed my addiction everyday, even in the off season, but 11 days ago I got a sharp pain in my leg. Unlike me, I went to see the Dr. to get it checked out. After a sonogram I was told I had a blood clot. I was told if I didn't remain seated with my leg up I was going to be put in the hospital. Since I don't have a notebook computer, I only got very brief chances to check in and often for less than 5 minutes.
I'm starting to feel better now and I have my second follow-up appointment tomorrow. Until yesterday every time I stood (nature calls) it quickly built up pressure and the pain returned. Yesterday it was variable, some times the pain returned in 2-3 minutes, others it was more like a half hour.
Hopefully this trend continues, I've got lots of work to get done. I've never sat watching so much TV in my life, I'm mentally ready to get going, I just need to get the Dr's approval (my wife is an RN and watches me like a hawk to keep me in line).

Hope that you feel better soon. At least it's the off season. (if there really is a off season)

That's tough. I'm sorry to hear it. I have to say, as I read your post and I saw "clot", I thought - this isn't going to end well. Thankfully, you'll be on the mend with some rest. Hang in there.

Dave,
As hard as it is to sit around like you have been told to do, follow the Doctor's orders, the consequences of not doing so aren't real good. Good luck and best wishes for a full recovery.
Gary

Yes, I was threatened with the hospital and told that things could go wrong, death being the worst.

First choice isn't good or fun. Second choice makes it impossible to make syrup next year. I hope you have a speedy recovery without any more problems. Projects and work can wait, life doesn't.

I'm doing much better today. Dr's appt in morning for a follow-up. Hopefully he gives me the green light.
Thanks to all who prayed for my recovery.

Listen to your wife.

I hate sitting around watching TV.

But I hate dying more.

Get well soon.

Dave,

I agree with the others- sitting and watching television for a while is the lesser of the two evils! Sorry to hear about the leg but happy to hear it's improving. -Steve

Maple flats, get well soon! Your too much of an asset and there's too much I need to know for you to "log off" permanently. Listen to the Doc, and wife. Ted

Yeah the words " Blood Clot " bring back some bad memories, hope your health improves quickly, the only thing worse than a health problem is the allternative and nobody wants that.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words. Yesterday the Dr. said I had to lay low for another week, I can work a little but should not be on my feet for a long time until next Friday. All in all I feel much better, but this extra week lost will never be regained. I don't work the 14-18 hrs days anymore like I did 30-40 years ago. Now 6-7 is plenty. Lots left to do, but it will work out somehow.

Dave, did they know what caused the blood clot ? I'm at the same age where you start thinking about health issues that just a few years ago you could shake it off and keep on trucking. Hope you get better, good luck.

The Dr. had no idea what caused it, no suggestions for healthier lifestyle. His only comment was that people who are very sedentary have more issues with clots, but I sit very little and I get plenty of work related exercise. I do not go to the gym, I go to the woods.
He has put me on a blood thinner, for at least 6 months.
As far as clotting if I get a cut, I have always clotted far quicker than most people, in fact before surgery about 30 years ago, after a clot time test I had to go to a specialist who found no cause after about $4,000 worth of tests (of which $1800 was second(?) opinions from 9 other doctors at $200 each [friends of his], which I didn't appreciate at the time, I was self pay). The results, they had no idea why I clotted in about 2/3 the low end of what is considered normal clot time. By the way, my dad also clotted fast and he lived to the age of 91, I have no idea if he ever had a clot because he never showed any signs of pain.

Dave , I was wondering how I was ever going to find the time to watch Maple Men, if it is out could you watch the series and post back the highlights !!!
On a serious note take it easy, get rest and well, plan for next season. Pen and paper go well to put your thoughts down when you are stuck inside.
I will keep you in my prayers, god speed to a quick recovery.

I had not heard of "Maple Men". My TV days are now over. I'm back on light work for 2 more days, then I can return to normal.
