Those numbers are evaluated following a survey, final numbers wiil be issued in September. This included the production of 1.4 Million new taps of the new 5 millions allowed by the fed. Producers had 2 years to put all new taps in production.

So is it safe to say that 3.6 million more taps will be set up this year for the 2018 season. I cannot help to think that the bulk price will be .20 lower for next season. I'm sure here in the USA we are adding over a million taps a year also. It will be fun to see what we can all do in the future to sell more syrup.

Will the price to consumers be reduced too? What would happen to demand if maple syrup was more competitively priced with other sweeteners?

Kind of off topic but you'd have to get down to .25 per ounce of Sugar to be even close to some of the high end artificial sweeteners, that would net you 32 dollars per gallon of syrup, not much profit in that when you consider all the work involved.

And it still wouldn't be cheap enough I don't think.

This number does not tell the whole story. Because of the production quotas, producers in Quebec are limited in the amount of lb they can deliver to the federation without penalties or delayed payments. This excess production ends up on the "black market", being sold mostly in small containers but also sometimes in drums behind the back of the federation. This portion of the production is not declared to the federation nor to the taxman. If a guy has 10000 taps with a quota of 3 lb per tap, and harvested 5 lb per tap in 2017, he sends 30000 lb to the federation. What do you think happens to the extra 20000 lb??? Of course, the Federation does not say anything about this fact as it undermines their whole quota system.

I can only speculate as to the actual production figure for Quebec.

I only operate a few hundred taps on buckets with my family, which is why I'm not afraid to speak out about this fact.

Southfork. Why would packers charge less for their syrup? They are in it to make every nickel,,,unless they are trying to undercut another packer for market share they charge the same price and make more money because their raw material costs are much less.....EPIC WIN!!! Packers are in it for packers,,,they just sit back and laugh at people adding more and spending more,,,,,,more hamsters on the wheel,,,kinda funny really

Staybridge your post is very interesting and I have heard about this happening. My understanding is that the American Packers are buying up the Backdoor syrup first (with the federation knowing it).

Unfortunately Parker, you are correct. And you do not have to look very far to find evidence of this going on. Another EPIC WIN is when the packer is also an equipment dealer. Talk about the hospital owning the funeral home.

There is american made equipment. We are not getting the exchange rate now so they might just as well keep their equipment up there.

I had a syrup buyer laugh and tell me most producers live hand to mouth so they have to take what we offer. Never sold him syrup again.

Does anyone know what temp Bascom keeps his cooler? Looking at building a big cooler. Why sell at those prices, things tend to change and the bright side is I may be better off in the long run doing some more marketing of my own.
