For all you guys/gals thinking of planting a few sweet sap silver maples. The price has really gone up. I stopped there this morning to get some replacement blueberry plants for the ones that did not make it last year. 1 maple will cost you $22.00 but if you buy a 100 he will let you have them for 20 bucks each.

That's quite a jump from the $6 they usta be last year. He can keep 'em!

Fred if you want to plant maples we could get together and thin out my woods as I have quite a few spots that are over run with 6' plus sugar maples.I would work out a good price with you.

It is a real job to do a transplant on a tree that big. First it has to be root purned in the fall and the taken up in the spring, but I will keep the offer in mind.

Uh - I think you got that backward, Fred. I think you root prune in the spring and transplant in the fall. Bill McKently could tell you for sure.

According to a forest ranger that is what he to us to do many years ago when we wanted to plant trees on the fireman's field. My old memory could have for gotten.

I do not do any of that and I have had success in planting many of trees even bigger than that with little loss.However why do you prune the roots?

As luck would have it I just got off the phone with ST Law Nurseries an the owner said to root purne in the spring and again in the fall then take the tree out in the spring. Root pruneing allows the roots to heal as to being just yanked out of the ground.
