There are long hydrometers and short ones as well as long cups and short cups you need one for whatever cup you have. Some will say length in description some say on label on box (mine do).

Is there a advantage on a wider cup over a thinner cup

A wider cup will hold more syrup so it won't cool down as fast giving you a little more time to get an accurate reading.

I have a wide cut because it takes longer to cool. The long hydrometer is better than the short.
For a cup, I use a Murphy cup that tells what the reading should be at whatever temp. the sample is at.
As back-up, I also have a cup I made out of PVC pipe and a flat bottom cap attached. I always use that with my sap hydrometers.
