I purchased these jars and am bottling at about 185* F. The lids are screwed on quite snug, yet the foil is not sealing to the jar on about 20%. After filling the jars I tilt them for about 5 minutes. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If that's the actual cap style you got with them (flip top like a salad dressing or ketchup bottle?) I don't think they will give you a reliable seal. Suggest a one-piece solid plastic or metal cap. The foil liners are notorious for not holding a seal too. I have some very small bottles with foil seals in plastic caps and have had issues with them as well.

You are correct in the top coming with the bottle. Some seal real well, others not so much.

You can get metal caps for those from Sugar Bush Supplies for about $.12 each. We purchase our jars with metal caps and then buy a supply of the plastic ones and give customers a couple with each order to use after opening the jar. They are nice for pouring from the jars.

I have found with these type of caps not to lay them on their sides. When I do they leak and don't seal. I have just let them stand upright and they all seal. I would like it if they would put metal caps with the bottles like they used to. Wonder why they changed this.

I don't think that's wise advice. You need the syrup to sterilize the lid. Only way to do this is to put it on its side.

A few years ago I got some bottles with that same style cap, they had several seal failures. The only glass I seem to have good results with is ones that come with a plastic seal in the cap and a little plastic lip that extends below the cap about 1/16-1/8", like what comes with the Leader maple leaf shaped bottles and many others that use that same cap. I no longer buy bottles that do not have that cap.

With the flipper caps as I call them, at first we had a problem with the caps leaking, we let the bottles lay on there side for about five minutes we had all kinds of leakers, now we still lay them on there side but only for a minute or so and we have not had a problem with caps leaking

Thanks for the advice everyone. Yesterday when I bottled my 1 1/2 gallons I did as Sweet Shady Lane suggested. I left the bottles on the sides for 1-2 minutes and then stood them, every one sealed properly. Previously, they were spending 5-10 minutes on their sides. Hopefully this works as local supplies and options are quite limited.
