View Full Version : Need some filter press help badly :-(

I brought some syrup over to a buddy of mine today who offered to run it through his filter press. I brought my own bag of DE that I bought online from Amazon that is food grade. We filtered 10 gallons using his DE with no problems. Then I said let's use the stuff I brought so you don't have to use all of your supplies. The color was different it was slightly tan as opposed to his which was pure white. As soon as we started mixing it in the syrup we noticed that it wasn't dissolving into the syrup like his would. Then we tried to run it through the press and no luck at all, it clogged everything and just started making the pressure increase on his press. The syrup was only coming out of his overflow hose and would not go through the filter. Has anyone else ever had this happen? Is this batch of syrup ruined now? I am really upset because it was over 10 gallons of syrup that is now affected.

I headed home to try using my normal prefilters and synthetic wool to see if it would work. Reheated 5 gallons of it to 190 and tries to pour through my filters, all it seemed to do was sit there. The DE just clogged up 7 layers of filter and barely made it through them. The syrup that did make it through is all cloudy.

Has anyone done this? Is there anyway for me to fix this?

Picture attached if the DE I used.....rookie mistake when I saw "food grade" I just assumed it wouldn't be an issue.

😩😩😩😩

Not sure why you have started another thread for the same question. People have offered some good advice in your other thread.

It goes back to the old saying Pay me now or pay me later.
Buy the DE from a Maple supplier. Get what works and not that "Food Grade?" DE from nonmaple suppliers. A producer near us tried the other and all he got was muddy syrup that would not filter. By the way, he had a new bag of DE but went to a local feed store and got the other. Why People?

There really isn't any advice in the other thread except to suck it up and move on lol I was on out local page to see if anyone who may have some ideas and are local could possibly help.

Just did a refresh, 2 of the responses that said to just add the right DE and filter again weren't there originally. I just don't have 3 hours of driving time available today. I'll let it settle and see if there was anyone local that may be willing to help me try again.

It was my 1st time doing it, I had no idea there were differences other than pool DE, which I knew NOT to use. This had nothing to do with being cheap or trying to avoid the "right one" just didn't know there was a difference in the food grade version.

I have to give these 2 threads a thumbs up! We were running low on DE which I was supposed to re order early last week and of coarse slipped on that. Friday rolled around and the oh crap moment came! We bought the food grade version from fleet farm but in the end never needed it, runs weren't big enough to use up the remaining maple grade DE. After seeing these threads I will not think about doing that again.
I did manage to learn something else over the weekend though. DON'T put the end plate on with the hole up. It won't filter, Ha Ha. I loosened it up 3 times and changed paper before I realized the end was rotated 180 degrees. Got a good laugh out of it though!!

Can you edit the thread title to say, "maple specific DE only"? May help make searching easier for others in the future!
