This marks my second year into this new adventure. I finally figured it was time to pull the plug and build something of my own. I thing I have read every how to on here and across the internet. As much as I would love to buy one of these massive evaporators I live on a small lot and need to manage my extra projects as my wife calls them.
So I ventured to Craigslist to purchase this very old very very heavy wood stove brought it home and immediately gutted the old fire brick out of it. Some I saved some just turned to dust. Found fire brick on sale at tractor supply for $2 a brick so off to another road trip to Medina of course my local shop did not carry it and wanted me to pay shipping to the local store. Nothing to attach brick or arch paper to the door anyone have suggestions?
Made some measurements and ordered some custom pans to fit the top. Cortland machine &a Tool in Cortland NY was more than helpful in offering his ideas and suggestions to get me what I wanted with what I had to work with. Even welded an air induction tube up for me while I waited and tossed it in for free! I will be going back when I eventually upgrade (that's how all this works right we just keep buying bigger) large pan sits directly on the flame with the warming pan just sitting on top of it. Looking to wrap copper around the flu like most others have done for pre warming. 161321613316134
Well I have almost all the parts to get this thing fired I am realistically looking at next season. I am waiting on a friend to plasma cut the top out of it and move the flu pipe for me along with a hole for the induction tube into the back of it. Door is off for cleaning inside.
What do I use for the blower? Furnace fans are kind of exspensive. A friend offered me the blower from his kids blow up bounce house surely would provide enough air but I don't want to listen to it howl for hours.
I have been very succesful these last two years for just the small bit I was making. I have a block of land with more sugar maples than I can even attempt to handle. All flat land so it's all on buckets and have to be walked in and walked out about 800yds each way. Collecting sap can be a challenge! I have 50 taps some closer than others.
