Just curious as to who has the largest operation still using a wood fired evaporator? Seems most bigger guys have gone to oil-fired.

Not sure if this guy is the biggest but it's a darn nice setup.
CDL Master evaporator.

I don't know how big the rig in that video is, but CDL makes "Master" wood burning evaporators up to 7'x18'. I can't even imagine what running a 7x18 would be like.

It's a lot of equipment to count on just to get wood in the box. One hydraulic hose blows and you'd be panicking to get wood in. I'm sure they have extras of hoses and such but feeding a beast like that you wouldn't have much time to fix it.

Yeah, but if the hose breaks at the right (or wrong) time and place, you would have an oil fired rig :o

I love burning wood. But if I ever got that big I would 100% switch to oil. Look at the size of the coverall he needs just for his wood pile. Never mind getting all that wood. I'm sure they use a processor but it's still gotta be cut and dragged out of the bush. If I had a massive fire wood business and just kept a bit here and there to fill my pile then maybe. But just seems like a lot of fuel burned, chainsaws, trucks, processor, tractor, just to get the fuel for the evaporator. Still a pretty cool rig though. I'd love to operate it for a day. I'd ask for a window if I was the wood loader. Kinda boring not being able to see the rig from where you load the wood in.

The Lapierre Sugar Camp taps around 175,000 and use 2 force 5 wood fired arches.

We use wood we have a 5x14 and currently tap about 2200 hope to double that in the next few years. But will always use wood.

Im making a leap to 5x16 wood fired with preheater blower and 8k taps

I have a 5x14 force 5 currently running 5400 taps with plans to expand

Some are swapping to electric. Larivierre (sp) from Maine Maple was telling us about their new all electric a couple years ago. If you're running off generator on the Golden Road, I guess it's just as easy to go electric.

Doug Wheeler near us is running a Lapierre 5x16 Force 5 on over 30,000 taps. If I had to guess he's probably evaporating in the range of 350 gallons per hour so I'm sure they're running an RO to pretty high Brix to keep up!

Vernon Wheeler (also over 30,000 taps) switched his oil evaporators out for a wood pellet CDL unit. Still wood but much easier than filling a fire box!
