View Full Version : How to fix 22 cal holes in a poly tank
I have a 1500 gal tank that has 9 holes in it from a 22. I was thinking of drilling the holes out and putting a #10 ss machine screw with a couple fender washers with rubber flat washers and squeezing it together with a nut. I think this will work I was just looking for other ideas on hoe to fix it.

Depending on the exact material you can probably weld it. Also, 3M and others have some pretty good two-part plastic repair material. Visit your local bodyshop and they'll be able to help you out.

Food grade silicone will work short term to get you through in a pinch.
Leak Ender 2000 or Flex Seal, you can cut a boat in half, tape or spray good to go,you've seen the commercial, has to work.
In the past I fixed a plastic with a 2 part epoxy made for plastic. I think I got it at the local hardware store.

If you do an epoxy (JB weld) my suggestion is that you somehow smear some inside so it is like an hourglass config and cannot peel off/push out ><
Your flat washer idea with an epoxy added as described above would work too.
Tire plug for a quick bush fix maybe too?

I don't think a tire plug would pass for food grade !!!!

Leak Ender, Epoxy, Flex Seal, JB Weld....yeah, not thinking any of these are real good solutions for a food grade container.

I'm wondering how the odd number of holes? All ins and no outs? Got the lead out I assume?
stainless hardware and silicone washers sounds like the safest option for food grade

I'd likely go with the hardware route... unless you have a plastic welder handy...
The tank is likely Polyethylene.. and to my knowledge nobody has come up with anything that sticks to polyethylene well...
If it's polypropylene you will have more options..
But.. If you can find some stainless "Elevator Bolts" ... run them from the inside out, with your gaskets behind, and you will have a really good seal.

I would tap them, then put clear silicone on ss bolts and screw them in. this works, I have done this before.

I bought a plastic welder at Harbor Freight for a couple of bucks and fixed a white plastic tank with a few holes in it. Easy to do, not much money involved and it holds sap no problem.
I would tap them, then put clear silicone on ss bolts and screw them in. this works, I have done this before.
Brian, I have a plastic welder if you ever need one.

You have the best solution going. What could be easier and as sanitary.

I sold GVM Poly tanks in the 1990-2006. The older they are the more micro cracks you will have. I Had a tank fail last summer for water that was 19 years old.
The poly weilder is the best solution to reduce the micro cracks and get a long term fix.
I love the elevator bolt fix with an oring!

Thanks for all the great ideas I really appreciate all of your input. As for what happen to the tank it no great story just some vandalism. I would guess the nine hole where from the nine rounds the clip in the gun held. Anyway I don't want this to be about that I just wanted ideas on how to fix the tank so thanks again for all of your input.
