View Full Version : Can yellow sap be caused by freezing?

If you had ice then it probably was concentrated. Sap does change color for different reasons so I would probably keep it. Try boiling a little on the stove if you want to be sure.

If it tasted fine I'm sure it'll make good syrup.
Was it a steel drum or stainless steel drum? If steel, it didn't possibly get any rust in the sap?

Good ol' tree pee always scares the noobs! Generally sap that is yellow, but still clear and not funky in smell or taste is perfectly fine to ahead and use. Often just means rain or snow got in. Some people dump it out on general principle. I don't and have yet make a bad batch of syrup just because it had some tree pee in it.

Yeah but what if you find a dead squirrel in the bucket and the sap is yellow...then what do you do? Keep the squirrel and dump the sap? or vice versa?

You ring out the squirrel and throw him out. Keep the sap for sure.
