I wouldn't use them, even though I have used bleach before in my home in wouldn't hang an old bleach jug on a tree and call it a sap bucket. I just don't believe you can get it clean enough being plastic.

I'm with Nate. Plastic is porous, so if it had something in it that you wouldn't normally eat...

The used plastic pails, barrels and cage tanks I use had a food product in them originally. If new ones are not an option, this is the safest way to go.
