just finishing up my evaporator and have a question about mounting the smokestack. I welded 3/16 sheet steel to an 8" inside diameter pipe and welded it directly to my stove. Was wondering what to use between the smokestack and sap pan. Would 3/8 angle iron warp or would like a one by two tubing be better.

The angle should be fine. That far back in the arch, it will get hot, but not enough to warp.

Angle should work but go at least 1/4 inch minimum thickness.

I built the same stack for mine. I mounted mine to 1/2" plate steel and welded an angle on the front to sit against the back of the pan. Then welded 4 bolts to the rails on the arch and drilled the holes on the plate. I get it glowing red and hasnt warped yet. Kept it 2" away from stack hoping heat wouldn't transfer to the back wall of the pan and burn. But it does. I have to put a piece of ceramic blanket in between pan and stack to keep it cool.

My arch is not homemade, but when I bought new pans I found it necessary to build a new rear stack collar. The new pans were as ordered, but the old Leader pans were not as labeled, the new ended up being 1.5" longer. I thus had to make a new stack collar. It is made of 1/4" mild steel with 1x1x1/8" thick angle welded on top, pointing up and the base stack sets on it. This has worked well, now in it's sixth season. As such mine is 1/4" + 1/8" for a total of 3/8" thick. The base stack simply rests on that and the angle iron pointing up just inside the stack holds it in place as gravity holds it down.

Thanks for all the info, Im going to weld on a 2x2x3/8 angle to the front of it. April 8th and I'm still building, sap is flowing going a little crazy here. Its that horrible thing called a job that I have to go to every day or else I could finish this thing. 2x6 evaporator with air under fire
