so im tossing the idea around about switching from wood to oil. i currently have a 4 by 12 with air tight front with air under fire and air coming in from door nozzles and around front of arch. just like the convienance factor of oil. what are peoples thoughts on oil vs wood / will it effect my syrup quality? im hoping to get out and view some oil fired rigs this yr.

If you don't like to cut wood you will love it. Switch on = fire, switch off = no fire!
Probably need a couple burners for that size arch.
Might burn 10-12 gallon per hour????? my guess?

Chris
I have a 3x12. I run a carlin 701 with 2- 5.5 gallon per hour nozzles. Nozzle ratings are at 100 psi. I run 175 psi which puts me close to 14 gallons per hour. Brian on here runs a 701 on his 4x12. I used to burn wood with my 2x6. It would be tough to go back. Syrup is no different. I have been told I should have a barometric damper but I do not. Works like it is.

its not that i dont like cutting wood its just i never make time for wood cutting . then about mid feb i start getting nervous about wood. sure would be nice to have one less thing to do/worry about... thinking id rather work on more taps instead of standing at splitter sweating ..

If you switch to oil you will never go back to wood. On a 4x12 we run a 801 Carlin 2 stage burner burning 12.5 gph if that helps you.

probly gonna do one more yr of wood then make a decision to either stay wood or go oil. oil sure looks nice. im assuming i can use my existing pans and just get new arch. almost bought a gasifier but for the price of that i can get alot of oil!!!!

I think it's a preference and neither fits everyone but having done both I'd say that oil fits very well into a situation where you have to work at another job and sugar too.
