Hi everyone. First post and first year making syrup. Got a nice little hobby setup and tapped 100 trees with buckets. I made my first batch and was disappointed to find the syrup had an off taste and smell. Not bad just didn't smell like maple syrup. Thought it might have been the turkey fryer pot I finished it in. So I tried again this time finishing on a clean stock pot on the stove. Tasted great until I filtered it. It's a wool filter I used both times. Has no smell to it and it washed it out in hot water only between the first and second batch. Does anyone have any thoughts on this or experienced this? Not sure what I'll do for my next batch as I need to filter it somehow.....

Did you handwash the filter or use the washing machine?

Only hand washed. But it's a little older from a friend who used to make syrup too. Never machine washed though.

It sounds like your filter got moldy. To confirm, make a batch and don't filter it. Let the niter settle for a day or two and then taste it. Your first batches might be okay for sweetening coffee or making maple nuts.

Is there any way to clean a filter if that's what happened? Would boiling it remove any possibility of it being the source?

No and no. Filter is junk.

Orlon filters aren't very expensive. Buy a new one and some pre filter papers. If you determine that it's not the filter try to find someone in your area that can taste it and identify the off flavor.

I agree with wiam. If you confirm it is the filter and not something else in your process, use the filter for a hat or something. Don't try to filter even sap through it.
