View Full Version : Flaky white sediment?

My first two batches this year both have a lot of a flaky-white sediment floating around in it. It eventually settles out as the syrup cools. Have a Sheets filter press and also tried a batch with cone filter and got the same result (thought maybe it was my filter papers). Anyone ever experienced this and have any ideas what could be causing it and how to get rid of it?

I could be way out of line, but by the pic it looks over cooked and crystallized.

That has happened to me before. It turned out to be sugar sand (niter) I eventually got a new cone filter and now I use 4 paper filters inside of it and have never had it happen again.

I would agree with the over density, maybe?
Looks to course to be sugarsand?

Thanks all! Yes, definitely looks different than sugarsand - almost like little bits of wet paper floating around.

Will try drawing off the next batch a bit earlier and also re-filtering and see if that works.

What DE are you using in that filter press?
