Seems to be the yr... I heard of more burned pans this yr than ever.
My friend with the little homemade put a few sticks in the fire, shut the stove up, loaded up the sap level a bit, and went to bed... 1/2" of black goop and char in the AM :( Didn't hurt the pan much, but ruined 8 hrs worth of boiling, 1.5 gl or so of syrup.
Another local long time sugarmaker with a big evap did the same thing this week... melted the solder out of it overnight.
I know of at least one more, plus all the ones posted here... you can't be too careful! It's not worth the cost and effort... running a bit too deep, and loading the sap up overnight is better practice than always running things too close.
