You can find a guide to filter press operation through UVM here http://www.uvm.edu/~pmrc/filter_press_brochure.pdf.
I have a hand pump filter press I used for the first time the other day. I heated up 3 gallons of syrup, mixed in about 4 cups of DE and recirculated the syrup until it ran clear. You have to recirculate it to "charge" the press. You are creating a cake of DE that builds up on the papers and in the window plates. This cake does most of the filtering.
If you have the 7" SL press, each window plate can hold 3.25 cups of DE. That's why I used as much as I did initially and my results were crystal clear syrup.
It was easy to clean and there was minimal waste. Lastly, if you still have a problem, just call SL.
