Hey folks, not sure how to phrase this question. Does the sugar in sap in a 55 gallon drum sink to the bottom or is it dissolved through out the barrel. I seem to get better readings in 5 gallon buckets than I do in the drum. Any thoughts appreciated. They are all on sugar maples.

I have found that if the sap has not been disturbed for a while, the sugar seems to be more concentrated on the bottom. But it's never been that drastically different unless I've been throwing out the ice that forms on the top for a few days and the remaining sap is really, really cold.

Here is the really big question. Does temperature of the sap have make a difference on the reading? it was 60 degrees today.

I think most sap hydros are calibrated to roughly 38º

I know my sap hydrometer states 38 degrees on it. I am sure temp has an effect on the reading.

Yes, the temperature of the sap will affect your reading. A quick google search of "sap hydrometer compensation chart" will help you out.
