Looking at a Honda wx10 or a Generac CW10K pump. Will these pumps burn up if they run dry? (if they finish draining a 55 gallon barrel and I'm 100' away checking on a tap or something).

Thanks for any insight.

They have a reservoir that acts as the prime and also keeps the impeller wet even after all sap is pumped out of your tank.

If you've been pumping they will be fine, but you can not run it dry with no liquid in the pump housing. That is how the seals are lubricated.

When i'm pumping I never go to far away. I don't want to be 100' away only to see that the recieving tank is overflowing or hse came out and putting 12,20 or 30 gls of sap on the ground. It also seem to pump better and be easier on the pump if I idle the pump when I'm at the bottom of the tank.

I don't think anything bad will happen in the amount of time it takes you to briskly walk 100'. I do that pretty often. I'll start the pump then gather the buckets that are close to the tank so I have something to do while I wait. Every once in a while I'll get the timing wrong and have to run over and shut off the pump. It's not a Honda, but I think the same principles apply.

There's a check valve in the inlet to the pump to keep liquid in it to keep it primed. It will be okay for a few minutes but if you leave it too long you could turn the sap into syrup.
