Switched to oil this year. I have a carlin 601crd burner with a 60 degree solid nozzle which boils great in the flue pan, but not so much in the very front. Crossflow pans. Tried an 80 degree hollow nozzle, but it only poofs at the end of the startup. Any suggestions on what to do to make the 80 work? Thanks.

Tell us more about your rig. What size? What is your oil pressure? What size nozzle? I had trouble getting front pan to boil last year when I built mine. I run a 701. I ended up dropping the pressure and upsizing nozzle. This gave me same oil flow but fireball was closer to front.

2.5x10 drop flue, 5 gph nozzle, 130 psi. Over 130 psi flue pan is crazy boil and under no boil in front partition. I've made 230 gals of syrup so far this year, so it works.

This is from memory which is fuzzy most days. On my 3x12 I backed pressure down to 100. I think I have a 5 and an 8 for nozzles. (701 takes two). I think you need a bigger nozzle and lower pressure.

The air mixture is also very important along with the tension head. The flame should be clean and smoke free.
