Just wrapped up this build and thought I'd share. I've only tested it with water but the results are really good so far. It shows the difference between gravity fed VS Vacuum. a little under two gallons gravity filtered in roughly 1 minute 30 seconds VS 8 seconds under vacuum.
I need a good syrup / sugar sand substitute for further testing. Any suggestions? I was thinking watered down corn syrup with corn starch...
(Excuse the Peter Griffin voice overs, I made this with a friend in mind. :-)

Sounds interesting.
You could buy a gallon or two of syrup, add a little water and boil it for a while to get a little niter formation. I don't think it would simulate fresh syrup though. Good luck.

Another way to do that. way more complicated. We use a shopvac for vacuum. Like troynh better

Nice! but what's the WD40 for? lol... How long have you been vacuum filtering?
I thought I had a gallon of buddy from last season to experiment with today but my wife told me no. She had used it... So, I mixed up some corn syrup and starch (which by the way doesn't work well for this) and brought that to a boil. Here is the result from that test.

It shows the difference between gravity fed VS Vacuum. a little under two gallons gravity filtered in roughly 1 minute 30 seconds VS 8 seconds under vacuum.
One reason the water flow through the filter under gravity was so slow is that the system is essentially vapor locked. Water will only flow into the bottom section as fast as air can leak out of that section. Since it is clamped on tightly, it will only flow slowly.
Regardless, vacuum will definitely improve the flow rate. In chemistry, the same approach is used with a Buchner Funnel https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%BCchner_funnel

Did you make the pans yourself. Does any of the water get sucke into the vacuum pump.

Jason,
They are modified SS stock pots from WalMart and SS rivets. And somewhat yes on the pump. The steam is getting sucked up not the water/sap...
I'm in the process of creating a 10 gallon surge tank that will have a filter on the hose. No different than a compressor just in reverse.

That's a slick idea. I hope it works well. I noticed after watching the video a second time that I thought they were modified stock pots. Will the vacuum pump attach to the surge tank, and the surge tank attach to the lower stock pot.

Correct.

Experimenting with a 10 gallon surge tank. Yes I know it's only water.... I'll be tapping 50 this Saturday. I'm hoping to try this thing next week!

Looks neat, hope it works for you.
I heard forcing the syrup through the cone filter was a bad idea...wonder if using vacuum would have the same or different impact?

Hey, I was just wondering if you had a chance to try this with some syrup yet.

I have but the jury is still out on this design. Worked great in the attached video but yesterday was another story. It slowed way down and I didn't have enough vacuum in the surge tank to keep sucking. More experimenting with larger volumes of vacuum and hose diameter are needed. I know some canadians are experimenting with shop vacs for suction. So for the time being, I'm going back to 4 pre-filters and 1 flat for filtering off the pan then the same for final finish.

Hi Troynh,
I was wondering if you had any more luck with your vacuum filter? The early results looked promising. Did the filter get clogged too quickly? I wonder if using some DE would help...
