Still a little early for the U.P. but the forecast looks like sapping weather in about a week. Tapped March 6 last year here in Munising. We're getting close.

We plan on tapping the first week of March.

I may have to take back my last post. Starting on Friday it looks like there may be a good full week of weather coming.
Anyone going to tap?

I'm waiting to tap. I also have to take in to account the angle of the sun now compared to 3 or 4 weeks from now. It will take a day or so to get the trees thawed then maybe a couple days to run before the snow starts falling again. I don't want the start and stop and have to wait another 2 weeks to start again. All in all, I think it is going to be a weird season from the way all our winter weather has gone. Luckily I only have to make enough for family and friends.

Almost started this week, did tap one tree in the yard and was running good. Instead added another 3/16 line with 35 tapes, so it will wait till the next warm up. Need to get enough for a least 17 gallons, that is what we made last year, and only 3 quarts left. Will have 3 lines with 80 taps and probably a few buckets.

Still to early. I know of someone who is tapped and it's not running very well. It looks like winter will be back for a couple weeks with lots of snow. It sure seems like it would be running hard with the bright sun and nice and warm but it really didn't. Hopefully we can get back to normal and have a decent year. Still adding more lines, tapping in a couple weeks.

I'll probably tap the first or second week of march. I'm as anxious as the next guy but I've done the early tap thing before and usually end up regretting it later due to healing holes and moldy buckets.

Put in 120 taps 2-20-17 and collected 50 gallons so far. 1st year doing this and couldn't wait any longer with 60 degree days. Next week looks like good weather for sap flow...we shall see.

I put in 35 taps. Couldn't wait any longer. Have a new Evaporator to use.
Flow is poor. I may put a bunch more taps in Sunday. Next week looks good.

I'm south of foster city, put 15 taps in last weekend just to test. Virtually no flow yet but going to tap 50+ on Sunday. Hoping for a great year as I had to skip last season.

Anyone going to tap?

Tapped last weekend-- gathered 225 gallons from 200 taps Thursday, boiling today and ready for next warm up.

Looks like a slow start. Couple warm days coming then cold weather returns here.

I have a place in Hancock, I'm here 4 days a week, 52 weeks a year, Mr. G keeps road open. Wife and I get along better that way. I tap 30 trees using old metal pails, boil in flat 30 gal pan, finish on camp.

That's great! I love that area. I parked my snowmobile trailer at Tony's once a few years ago. I think I gave them a few bottles of syrup in appreciation. My brother's road isn't cleared in winter. Both my brother and I are MTU grads and are drawn to the Keeweenaw.

Starting tapping Sunday March 5. Slow start but it ran nice Monday and Tuesday. Highs of 50 lots of snow melting. Still a foot or so in the woods.
Looks like it will shut off again for a week as winter is forecast to return again.

I agree with Fishman - early tapping can be quite frustrating. Tuesday was great (48/sunny) for cleaning equipment and shack, and the trees probably ran liked crazy, but..... Next Thursday (3/16) looks like the start of something good. Am getting back into the fray after a couple years off. Will start with about 50 taps and see how I get on.
Happy Sugaring guys!

North of 47°, tapped last Thursday, couldn't stand it, last weekend 3-40's caught the short run 35 gallons on 30 pails, 17th should start real flow. Boiled today will finish tomarrow. 16° this AM 2° wind, boil outside....ya got to love it

I'm a little worried here in Munising, we haven't tapped yet, was going to get it done this weekend. Anyway, today I look out back and the big maple right by the shack has buds on it already....

Anybody else see any budding?

Is it still worth tapping? No temps above freezing for almost another week, of course that forecast never changes ;)

U.P. Sapsucker
03-10-2017, 06:27 PM
Yes. We are not tapped yet either but will be this weekend. Next week looks like it's setting up to be perfect. Until we start to see bud sap or bad sap keep boiling. I think we will be good for at least a couple of strong flow weeks. Hopefully more

Well I got my new job and I was able to tap in on the 5th in Harvey, MI. Have 100 Taps in the subdivision (four great neighbors) Boiled about 125-150 gallons on Tuesday. 80"+ maple in the front yard gave up 15 gallons on 3 taps. Wood's tree were slow though. Agree next week is looking good.

Still haven't tapped here, was planning on this weekend. Looking at the forcast looks like it won't get above freezing until next weekend 😞. I'll put our taps in on Wednesday and Thurday. Walked/ snowshoes the bush yesterday, was -23 with wind chill, all my buds on Sugar Maple were tight with no sign of swelling. We'll be a full 2 weeks later then last year... .

I haven't collected in over a week, Some fresh sap in my bags but they are mostly frozen Less then a quart total in each bag i'd guess... just enough to keep them from flying away with all the wind lately. Hoping the trees thaw before the Monday otherwise there will be some long nights cooking after work... batteries are charged for the running lights if needed.
