Anyone put a sight glass in there air tight door? Where do you find one and the general cost? I built my new air tight door and was thinking of putting a sight glass in. Would FW Webb carry something like this?

I added one this year. Got a piece of ceramic class 7"x4"x3/16 from FastReplacementGlass.com. I am looking forward to seeing inside with the AOF on! With the forecast the way it is, I won't have to wait long.

I put one in my door. I picked it up on ebay. I bored a hole with a hole saw and attached it with high temp sealant and 2 sheetmetal brackets that looked like half of a swastika and some screws. I couldn't imagine being without one now.

I'll take a look on eBay thanks. Anybody have a pic of one installed?

I have ceramic glass and the glass was opaque halfway through 1st season.

Soot or something else? I have mine recessed about 1.5" from face of insulation.

Same here. Mine also cracked within the first couple of boils. It came stock w the evaporator. I ordered a new one from fast glass, hopefully lasts longer.

I have a glass that I was given from an old commercial boiler back when I added AOF. However my front is not air tight and I can see thru the small crack between the 2 doors. If I ever add an airtight door I may use it. I think the glass I have is quartz.

If I have a problem I might take one of my AOF nozzles and route it over the door and make a little air curtain blowing down and past the sight glass opening. when I got my glass, I bought two pieces. Also have a stainless steel replacement panel if things go horribly wrong.

My arch front has a sight glass, it stays nice and clean, I think the fire is hot enough that it doesn't soot up, can't help you with what kind of glass it is. Not a clue.

Ran the evaporator for the first time with the sight glass installed. This might be useful to tune AOF/AUF and has already been helpful in deciding when to add wood. Other pluses: It radiates a bit of heat where needed in our sugarhouse and it look neat!

I buried the ceramic glass back in the door away from the heat, but I built an air cooled door...never again without a site glass...how else can you see whats happening to your fire and adjust your air feed...Cleaning - I found that fireplace door cleaner works great, just wear gloves - its an acid... I just sprayed some on a paper towel and it wipes the crud right off...

If you don't want to pay for cleaner, you can take a wet towel, dip it in ash, rub the window and the soot will come right off, then wipe the window with a dry clean cloth/paper towel.
