I am a second year tapper and have a question. There are trees that we tap, that never give any sap. They had great crowns, and are healthy. Is there something we are doing wrong? There are other trees in the same groves running.

Dont take this wrong But are you 100 positive your tapping a Acer. I will admit to standing there looking at a tree and looking at its neighbor and wondering if Im crazy because they look the same and upon further investigation decided it wasnt a maple........................Drilled a hole and it was dry :emb::emb::emb:

Oh yes- that we are certain of. I marked them when they still had their full leaves and they were a perfect yellow during leaf change. I appreciate your candor! Might as well start with the easy fixes :)

Are you drilling deep enough? There are some maples that just won't run much if any sap. We had a beautiful Sugar Maple that was on the edge of a field that was 20"+ in diameter with a great crown and that thing would not run a gallon of sap all season long. After 3 years of trying it we gave up.

i have a beautiful 20" diameter sugar maple in the middle of my yard that will give me maybe a pint of sap each year. 50 feet next to it, I have another one that fills a 5 gallon bucket! guess trees are like people... some are frugal and some are generous!

I have the same problem with about 3 silver maples, one is about 28" the area often gets swamped perhaps that is part of it? I have another 10 or so that I could tap but they are all in similar wet soil so I don't know how much I'll get there either, guess there is only one way to find out.

This is the same problem that puzzles me I tap mine and a couple neighbors trees but none put out the sap that mine does it is 74 inches in diameter and I can get 7-8 gallons on a rely good day the other trees not even close I asked my neighbor about it today and wondered if it was because my back yard is like a swamp really muddy right now I have tapped already and getting a lot of sap

I've got one of those trees to. Nice 20 plus inch sugar in the front yard my son has tap 3 years in a row without a drop. Says we are skipping it this year.

I had the same problem. Last year I got new grounds to tap, prolly 65 trees. some , the sap poured from , some, zip. Most of the trees I tapped are large enough to accept 2 or more taps, towards the end of the year, I removed my non- producing taps, and doubled them up on my good producing trees. helped my yield a lot. I have no idea why they would be dry. I finally thought of it as a lake, all the lake does not hold fish, so double up your poles where the fish are

Same here GSCampChris! I tapped 104 on jugs Thursday and some filled the whole gallon in a day and others haven't given more than a drop. Also, some trees hardly ever produce year after year and others gush consistently. There are so many variables as to "why" that sometimes I'm left shaking my head, especially when all the criteria for good production are in place and............NOTHING!
