How much DE should I be using filtering 15 gals. of syrup. I use a wes full bank press but most of the time I use it as a half bank. Is there any difference using a full bank compared to using it as a half bank?

You didn't say what size press but assuming it's 7" we initially charged ours(full bank) with 2 cups DE in a batch of 5 gallons and then about 2/3 cup for every 5 gallons after that. We use 5 gals. milk pails. With a 1/2 bank the ratio of syrup to DE would be the same but you wouldn't use as much to charge it. Perhaps 1 1/4 cups to start. A lot of guys recirculate the first batch to be sure the filter is primed fully. It makes sense. It would be interesting to hear what other guys do. I'm using a 10" full bank this year and I'd like to know how to charge it if anyone knows as well. The only other thing I could add is we found that a little more DE as the season progresses to darker syrup seemed to help things go longer between filter changes. If you're plugging up without filling the plates then you need more DE.

Search back to 3-18-15. There is a thread "How much Diatomaceous to use?" Plenty of info to help you there.

There is a pretty good document on the PMRC site about filter press use as well.

How do you search this site by date? The pmrc site is great! Thanks Jared.

Your welcome sorry I didn't have the links ready earlier. Here you go. Every year I find myself revisiting some of these publications.
