Sap!

Although we had a couple little runs in the last week and a half, Thursday night was the first good one of the season. We gathered 112 USgl from 200 scraggly reds on Friday, boiled 8 hrs Friday on the little homemade and only got 2/3 of it boiled, and it yielded 7.5 litres (2 USgl). $50 worth of syrup for 3 peoples' wages for 8 hrs plus wood, etc. doesn't sound like very good pay :rolleyes: but we had fun at it.

Ran some more today, cooler tommorrow, then 45-50 F for Monday, so should run then.

We've boiled about 8 hrs each of the last three days, made 6 Imp gl, which is 100% of last yrs total! Of course, double the number of trees, but that's fine, the season is just really getting started, so should be more.

Colour is significantly darker than last yr for sure, and the taste is different too, but good syrup nonetheless.

Weather all gone to crap here.Too warm at night, rain, east winds, lighting
storm last night. I tapped on March 11th, and have only boiled three
times.I have never used that yellow sap from rain in buckets, but other
than more boiling or a chance of darker syrup, has anyone ever tried?

Why dump it?? Boil it.

Yeah, I'd boil it... or at least make a judgement based on sugar content, if there much rainwater in it, hardly worthwhile.

During slow runs when the trees are shutting down I get bright yellow sap from some of them and I usually dump it. Yesterday I boiled it and it made very good tasting grade a dark. I have boiled the yellow rain water in the past also and with a faster evaporator this year that is not a big deal anymore.
