Our sugar house ,being 124 years old, having all that steam hitting the rafters year after year, figured I better run a new set of rafters to lift the steam away up from the flue pan. It will be an enhanced steam away,3'x10' ,guessing maybe 800 lbs. with the hood? Thinking of getting a neighbour to saw 2 x8 oak for rafters,is this enough or overkill ?
Thanks for your input, just trying to get ready before the steam away arrives

I used 2 x 10's spanning the 16 foot wide sugarhouse. But mine is not as heavy, it's a 3 x 5 unit. I have not had a issue.
Built a trolley to lift and move the steamaway to the side of the arch. Pictures on here somewhere:)

Chris

Bruce:
What is the span between the wall and the ridge line?
I can run the numbers

Always overkill. I've never regretted making anything stronger than it needs to be.

My wife and I were down measuring this morning. The top of the plate to the top of the rafters ( ridge line ), measures 88" The span from the outside to outside of the plate is 195" ,and the rafters are 10'7" in length, varying from roughly 4" x4 " to more of a 2 x 4 . Also should mention that the arch isn't centred in the building, probably off by about a foot

Talked with Bruce today at Leader, figures I am quite high on the weight, thought it would probably be more like 550-600 lbs total
