View Full Version : App or spreadsheet for thinning syrup?

I like to draw a tad heavy and then thin before canning.
I've been using the tables in the Producer's Manual, but is there an app or spreadsheet for this where I can just plug in the variables and get a read-out for the amount of sap or water to add? Seems like it would speed things up and help reduce human error.
Thanks!

Some won't like THIS way but here it is... you ask about apps so you probably have a smartphone. Take a pic/pics with your smartphone of whatever charts you want to. Put em in your gallery. Click to them and enlarge when and where you need them. To access it'd probably take less clicks/time than a spreadsheet would and be always there as long as your phone is in your pocket somewhere. SURE a real app or spreadsheet may be cooler, but I doubt it'd be faster or more accurate.
take care, Mark
You would have to know exact amount of syrup to be thinned for this app to work. I never know that close how much is in the tank. I just keep splashing condensate in until the hydrometer floats right. But my tank has enough in it to leave the hydrometer right in it while adjusting density.

I also draw off a tad heavy and thin before bottling . I have used the charts that are posted on SBI which are very handy. However I like the simple app that MES has . It's on android a well as iPhone .

I also draw a little heavy and use the SBI chart, it tells you how many ounces of water to add per gallon. I only do 3 to 5 gallons at a time so it is pretty easy that way. Just use a little less than what you think you need to not go over and adjust some more. I usually have at least 20 to 30 gallons to put through the press at the end of the season and I use my sweet from the evaporator to thin it instead of finishing it. This puts more guess work into it but works pretty good after you get the hang of it.

We use the MES app as well. Works great. Punch in the temp of your syrup and it tells you what your bricks should be at. The dilute with distilled water to adjust. Add a small amount of water at a time not to thin to much.

I was wondering the same thing so I googled. I guess this (https://apkpure.com/mes/com.mapleexperts.MESDroid)
Why not make the correct density syrup the first time around?

We draw at the right density. But when we can it seems a bit on the thick side. We check several times while getting the finished syrup to temp to make sure. You may gain an extra quart while thinning it as well.

I'm having difficulty down loading this. Keeps telling me it's for Android...

I'm no algebra wiz so maybe the professor will correct me. Calculate the oz of sugar in your pot, then add water until the ratio of sugar to total fluid is at your target. I use my scratch pad: (Current Brix minus Target Brix) divided by Target Brix, times Current Fluid (in oz) = Amount of Water (in oz) to add.

FWIW, I have a similar calculator on my maple producers calculator app as well:

That is much closer to what I want, but for iPhone.
We all have our favorite methods that work, but I think that with the standard method of reading chart columns and multiplying it's very easy to make a mistake. It's like cutting lumber, except there is much more opportunity for human error.
I don't like adding a little water at a time because then I have to mix thoroughly each and every time to get an accurate reading.
I'd like a simple App where I enter:
The default brix target (the MES app uses 66, I've traditionally used 66.9)
Current brix reading
Current temp
Amount of syrup
The readout would be oz of water to add.

We use the MES app. Works awesome. Go to sugar house calculator and punch in your syrup temp and hit calculate. Instantly tells you the brix you need to be at.
