View Full Version : Who's using ceramic blanket behind firebrick?

So I'm finding that it might be much cheaper to use ceramic blanket instead of arch board behind my full size bricks in my new 4x14. A couple dealers recommended going that way too.

I'm concerned that the blanket will compress, which the board wouldn't. Anyone using blanket behind their firebricks? I am talking about doing this right in the firebox, by the way, where it will be subject to being hit with wood.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Blanket is fine behind the bricks. It isn't ridged, but pretty stiff compared to regular insulation.

I go that way. Sometimes I have to re point a little after the season but it holds up ok.

Like madmapler I have mine set up with blanket behind the bricks. Been that way for two years and doing well. I re-point a little every year, too.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

When you guys talk about repointing, are you talking about repairing the mortar on the inside of the bricks or removing bricks to fix insulation?

By the way, I found 1"x24"x25' rolls on Amazon for $77 with free shipping. That's 6# density. 8# density is $100/roll. I thought that was a very reasonable price compared to $5-7/ square foot for the arch board.

If they get loose I might pull one or two out and re mortar them but typically, I just pull out loose mortar and squeeze some new stuff in.

Sa-weet. Thanks! That's even cheaper. It is interesting that they list a "working temperature" and a "maximum temperature". Makes me wonder what the difference is, and which number other sellers are listing. Should be just fine, though since the board is only rated to 1800 anyways.
