I have a little 2x3 mason. The pan comes off real easy and thinking of just putting a piece of steel down and use it as a wood stove.. anyone ever do anything like this? Not looking to heat the barn, just warm my hands while cutting up a deer..

It's funny you say that was just thinking the same the other day Was going to grab a piece of steel boiler plate the size of the pan and use it as a cover and a wood stove

That's funny.,this site is usually asking if I can cut the top out of my woodstove and boil sap on it.lol The brick probably won't let the sides heat up but the top should get warm enough to keeps your fingers warm. Jeff

I did it. It works. When I moved inside with my 2#4 flat pan I didn't want to burn the place down when I took the batch off. So I got some sheet metal to fit and it would curl up but a couple bricks over the Firefox held it down enough to keep the smoke and embers inside. I wouldn't make too much of a fire in there but we'd shut things up when the steam stopped and in ten minutes it was good and warm in there. I'm sure I could have figured out a way to keep it from bending but I upgraded so I can't do it on a 2#8. Good luck and happy hunting! Brian

I came across some 3/8 ths inch steel and gave it a try. After about five minutes the steel curled up about 1/2 inch in the center where the fire was hottest.
I'll have to figure out a way to prevent this. IT was a bit snug so maybe the pressure from either end contributed to it curling up
Maybe a slab of soapstone would work better. Sounds expensive...

I used this piece of steel all season last year when not boiling. Works great! Easily gets the sugar house to a comfortable temperature. The draw is enough to keep the smoke from exiting where the steel curled up. Today we cooked grilled cheese on it with cast iron. It also gets hot enough the kids can roast marsh mellows if held a couple inches above the steel.
