I'll be running 5/16 tubing this year from a "lunchbox" diaphram pump to about 100 red maple trees on my 5 acres.

I've used buckets up till now. This will be my first year with tubing.

When is the best time of the year to install tubing?

I assume I should wait till the leaves drop (won't be long now).

But should I run it in the next few weeks when the weather is still relatively mild?

Or wait till it's closer to sugar season?

You can install tubing anytime. Colder weather makes for colder hands though. I put my original 800 taps in February with over 3 feet of snow. (Not recommended) in my opinion it would be soon.

Yes anytime before you need to tap. I have done it in good weather and bad. I hung some of my first tubing(short run) when the temp was 5 below zero. Get 'r' done!

Find a time when it is not to hot and not to cold. End of September to December is when I like to do the majority of mine

I've installed virtually all of mine in the winter in feet of snow, only because that was when I had the spare time. It takes half the time and effort though if you can do it on bare ground and in warmer weather.
