Hi there,

Any sugar producers operating on Crown Land in Ontario ever engage the MNRF regarding cutting and management? I am reading through lots of books and forums and see the value in opening up stands, cleaning out old maples, etc. I can see how this would be no problem on private land, but has anyone had luck in dealing with the MNRF on this? Any insights would be appreciated!

There is actually a "License" required to cut and remove firewood from Crown Land. You have to apply and then report the amount of wood cut and removed by the cubic metre. The fee is not too steep but there have been quite a few charges laid for logging without licence and the fee for logs is higher. Read it in the Cochrane newspaper. So even though you are not removing it from Crown Land you are cutting and burning it to make Syrup. Most CO's lay a charge and let you fight it.
