I'm wondering if anyone has used an automatic float similar to what is pictured. It's a DC switch and I'm not good at wiring. I'd like to mount the switch in the head tank. Thanks for any help you can provide.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161008/0bbd3193a2ff255f9353412b95616a33.jpg

We had something similar to that in our cistern at our cottage. It looks like it has a high and low float. You could check it with a multimeter to see what wires operate what float. The one we had was black wires for the bottom float and red wires for the top float. Yours could be different though. We had to have ours connected to a relay to operate the pump in the cistern because the float is dc and the pump was ac. Also the float switch wasn't rated for much load at all.

I use the same switch in my 55gal. drum. Works great. As Bricklayer says, put a meter on it and determine the wires for the floats. Get this two level relay on eBay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-Water-2-Level-Controller-AC-DC-Pump-On-Off-NC-Level-Float-Switch-/141651592278?hash=item20fb17c456:g:hncAAOSwPhdVP6B 3. There is a helpful diagram there too.

You will also need a 12vdc power supply for the relay. I used an AC to DC plug from radio shack. If you are using the switch to automatically fill your head tank, on the floats, look for the markings: NO/NC (normally open/normally closed). Put at NO on top for both. You may need to play with this a bit and reverse the floats (or the wires to the relay) as I used my relay for emptying, and looks like yours will be for filling. When the sap falls below the lower float, the relay turns on the pump until the sap fills to the top float, then shuts off the pump.
