I have 2 reds tapped at different lots. These trees are a ghost town this season. one tree has dust in the bucket. Last year these trees ran ok. Just weird. -super sappy

Sappy,
I too have had the same results on the reds. I have one I tap every year it thinks its a sugar maple lots of sweet sap and it is doing good but I tapped about 6 others and never got even a drop out of them. I tapped them when it was hard to get in the woods because of all the snow but I moved those buckets to sugars yesterday.

I have a red at the back of my lot that won't give up a drop! I have others that run like crazy with 2.5 sugar. Go figure.

All these variables are what make sugaring interesting!

To add more mystery...If I had to categorize mine, the small ones (12-18 inches) are running well and the larger trees (>20 inches) have run very little.

Yes I have always noticed a better run off small trees. I think they thaw a little faster and I think you will also notice a lower sugar content in the smaller trees. But i'ts fun when they fill a bucket in no time.

Super Sappy, I have mostly reds and they seem to be much more temperamental than my sugars about when and how much sap they will flow.

I got the report last night that the reds had some sap. I am going to go out on a limb and use this as a season index point. Even though temps are not going to go below freezing for 5 days the trees still need sap and my ground is still frozen solid .I think it is going to be a fine line between a good or poor season.Who knows??????????? super sappy

I am located in NW Wisconsin and tap sugar & red maples, so far this year the reds are producing decent amounts of sap and the sugars have done very little. Normally it is the exact opposite. It has been a different year for me so far. It does not look like it is going to freeze again here for at least another 4 or 5 days, 60 degrees and tornado watches for us today.

The sugars I have tapped were just about shut down with the warm weather last week but the few reds were filling buckets so I tapped a few more and they all filled the buckets but the sugar content is low. When the sugars were running the reds werent.
