I have a 300 gallon old fuel tank with old fuel in it. Once I drain off the old fuel what is the best way to clean the inside of the tank before I start working on it? I don't feel like blowing myself up.

What is you end goal with it? I made a pig roaster out of an old fuel tank so I just lit a fire in it and let it go. And did the same thing with a 55 gallon drum I used for my first evaporator.

I should preface that with I let it air out alittle while and punched holes in it before I just lit it up...

The end goal is building an evaporator out of it. Once I drain it my plan was to let it air out of a week or so.

I drained mine, opened the valve, removed any pipe and plugs that would come out and commenced to cut it open with a sawzaw. Mine had heating oil in it previously and a black goopy mess in the bottom. Whipped out as much as I could and let it burn the residual out. No issues at all.

My tank has gasoline. But I have read that white vinegar will do the trick.

Mine had fuel oil in it, I wouldn't cut into a gasoline tank without cleaning it first.

RE: cutting old gas tanks; Its not worth it, find another tank.

Fill it 100% with water.

Fill with carbon monoxide and then cut. I have done this before.

I have a 300 gallon gas tank we don't have use for. Plus a 275 gallon fuel oil tank. I just went from fuel oil to propane for the house. I want to turn both in to evaporators. I know the fuel oil tank I can cut and burn off the remaining oil. I still want to do something with the gas tank. If I fill the gas tank with water. Drain it. Refill it, then cut into it while full of water. Would that not make dilute the remains of any gas to the point of it being safe to cut?

You just dont want to cut into gasoline vapor.

The other factor to consider with this method is you will have hundreds of gallons of contaminated water that really shouldn't be dumped out on the ground.

Hey
As a environmental specialist your best way to clean and decomp the tank u want to use is to steam it.
Look and see if there is a tanker cleaning service in your area and have them steam it like food grade tankers trucks. It might cost you 50 bucks but we'll worth it. After it's steamed washed sanitize and triple rinse with fresh water.
I had the luxury of being able to use the boiler at work to do both my stainless steel storage totes this way. Steam removes odor and residue of any hydrocarbons that might be in your tank.

Sorry I forgot to add that is only if your going to use 1 for sap storage or transport

I'm looking at making an evaporator out them both. My concerns are the tank that has old gasoline in it. And trying to find a safe way to clean and then cut into the tank. I know with the second tank the one with fuel oil in it. That can be drained, cut and then burn off the excess.
