I've not boiled on pine, but read other posts where people use it to start hot, fast fires then augment with hardwood, I have almost a cord of virginia pine I'm goin to mix with oak & hickory this year, windfalls that I didn't want to burn in the fields

are you referring to red pine, pitch pine, or one the southern pines?
I have burned red pine with good luck- went through my old firewood processor slick...

The scrubby shortneedled pines that grow in the clay of southeastern Ohio, I've heard em called a dozen different colloquial names, ( Dad ran a sawmill for a while), my timber book says they are Virginia pines aka scrub pines

It will burn fine. I actually burnt some hemlock last year that my dad wanted to get rid of and that also burnt fine. You may have to load more often but it all works.

The best wood for cooking syrup is wood that's free and dry. After that, it doesn't really matter. It all burns.
