Hi all... im looking for some input or pictures of copula framing for a sugar house i finally pulled the trigget on

The shack is 8x12 built on a 2x8 platform walls are 7ft high with a roof pitch of 8/12 .
As seen in the pictures i have most of framing done and ridge beam is all set and squared. Im planing on a 2.5 x4 foot copula to accomade my 2x4 evaporator. There are no plans in expansion seeing as i am at my limit of tapped trees.
Any advice would help pictures would help more of inside framing
Thanks

Lol i already had those pics in my download file on my phone i been frantically searching the net . Can you get me pics of how you placed your stringers into the truss to allow for metal roof to copula over lap if possible

I would suggest flashing where end of copula meets roof. I did not and south wind storms will run down wall and leak inside.

14476 Here is how I framed mine. Pretty simple just a little roof on top of the main roof. I used a lot of construction adhesive and screws.

Hi,
Thanks for the fast response with all the help and pictures.
I just finished all the framing and the copula and trusses.
I updated my 1 wall and framed in a 63 x24 window that I acquired from a friend that just had new windows installed.
Here are some updated pictures to show the progress.14484144841448514486

What kind of roofing material are you going to use?

I'm going with steel roof with very low corrigated hieght profile.
My buddy works at a steel roof manufacturing company so I can get it for his cost.

Hey all....
Just a quick update the main part of the roof is on.
Hope for better weather Sunday.
It never fails weather man called for showers and as soon as i set up to start working is started raining.
I managed to plow forward in the rain and got the roof on , not near finished but panels are on.

Hi..
Total heigh is 13 feet .I went 36 tall before the trusses went on and 60 inches long with a width of 32 inches. I used 2x6 as a hinge board on bottom so it's nice and strong .total opening size is 27x57 so doors I'm thinking will be26x56 a little odd sized due to miss calculation on framing .Lol Here is another pic of what I have completed so far14539

Brother in law and I finished copula it's ready for stain now.
I like your roof jacks for working on i hade to do all my roof working out of the bucket of tractor
We cleared some trees and brush as well on weekend to brighten up the area.
I included a picture total area and the finished copula

Thanks!! It will be a board of rough sawn (no windows) 8" x 44" long hinged and on a pulley system both sides. I positioned it directly above the evaporator.

Still have to do the trip work and metal roof

How big is ur evaporator after research I found from alot od people it is best to go at least
1.5 times the size of your evaporating pan surface .
It would be alot of work to change if steam will not exit fast enough for you

johnpma
09-26-2016, 12:38 PM
2 X 3 pan size easy to change if needed I also have double doors the way I framed it I could add end venting too

Got the metal roofing and cap temporarily screwed in place lots of rain coming so wanted to button it up the best I could the overhang should keep the rain away until I can get back up there

poor quality pic-sorry

Well doors are on but one little @#*k up . I installed hinges on the wrong side of one door and didn't notice it till after I hung the door and closed both for a fit inspection
Only a few more trim pieces and its ready for stain then bring all equipment in and start working on the electrical

Great looking shack can you rotate the door and make it work

Hey JeffB:
What about adding a small trim piece to each horizontal hinge batten, on the right side on the bottom on the left side on the top to make the door battens all the same width and symmetrical. then move one set of hinges up or down to make the hinges all symmetrical? Jay

Well it's official my wife thinks I'm obsessed and she may be right lol....
At 830 in the dark working from the lights of my pick up i removed door and flipped hinges to repair my blunder
Lol... yep I may be a little OCD 1458614587

Lol you should see the light I have to mount by peak. Found it at the dump and the wife is cleaning it up and painting it same colour as the window trim. Lean too shed off of the one side is this weekend metal and Lumbe is sitting in my other garage. Not sure if granite slab in the budget but I do have some left over interlocking brick from the patio! Lol

Hey all
Well its done only have to stain the one side of copula now that wood shed is on and I can work off of its roof to do it . Installed my home made chimney roof jack and installed chimney and finished roof completely. Just need to move fire wood over to the new storage shed part and electrical and sap plumbing can be finished in the winter.

Well done! Will you be doing your finishing inside the shack as well?

JeffB
10-23-2016, 07:34 AM
No I finish in the garage by the house it's alot easier with a heated garage and work benches to filter and bottle. Plans for a finishing shack are in the future tho.

Did a test boil to test out the cupola yes!! Success steam rose straight up and out both side very happy

JeffB

Very nice ! I'm working on electric for blower and plan on having a test boil next weekend and modify my blower manifold

Daryl
11-16-2016, 05:54 AM
Try and do a test boil when the air is heavy. The steam will fill the sugar house and not go out the cupola.
I run hoods that are tight on the flue pan and the stacks go thru the roof and will still fill the sugar house with steam when the air is heavy.

JeffB
11-28-2016, 07:19 AM
Hey all the sugar shack is complete . Electrical and plumbing for head tank is in .
I completed a 2 test boils if weekend to figure out what needs to be tweaked for the new blower system air manifold inside evaporator. Not many adjustments are needed I don't think a few more holes in piping under fire might help.14801ì1480214802
