Red Maple measles!?

I have dark spots all over my Red Maple leaves. Looks like they have the measles! :-|

I've heard of Maple leaf "tar spot fungus".

Is that what my Reds have? Should I have any cause for concern?

It does look like tar spot. I would not get concerned. Generally it's an aesthetic issue.

Do Reds get tar spot every year (never noticed before I started making syrup)? Or is a random occurrence?

It's worse during dry years.

The fungus is present all spring and summer. It just doesn't show signs until now & into fall. If you have a few trees you can remove the fallen leaves as that is where the spores are. Would help lessen the tar spot.
