Portions of Eastern Connecticut have been hit hard by a re-infestation of Gypsy moths. Vast areas of Red and White Oaks have been completely stripped of their leaves. Where oaks are lacking, maples and tamarack have been hit hard. It has been too dry to activate the virus that kills the caterpillar stage of the moth, so they are laying eggs like crazy. It is an ominous prospect for next year.
Attached is a photo of a European Tamarack right outside the door of my house.
