View Full Version : Sugar content
I understand about sugar content and the rule of 86. Is there another tool to out there cheaper then a refractomer to figure out sugar content? Are they accurate or do I save my money untill next season. I talked to to a couple of sugar people today and they said there sugar content has been between 1.2 and 1.5 all weekend. Some of them said they just dumped it out and others just boiled longer making a darker syrup.
It would be nice to know especially on my new rig. It would a least get me into a ballpark time frame on how long I may have to boil.
Take care

Cheaper maybe is a 'brewers' or 'vintners' hydrometer...As long as it has sugar content by percentage, you will be fine...

I am running about 2.5% on what little sap I have. I seems to be accurate as long as the sap temp is close (38 degrees) for mine.

I use a sap hydrometer also. I place the hydrometer into the feed tank to take a reading. My last sugar content reading was 2.3% on Monday.

Out of my RO, thats how I am cheating. I have one maple that runs 4.5% sugar right out of the tree though. I wish I had 1500 of those.
