Sap still running

I was out cruising timber in Indiana county, PA in a nice grove of sugar maples today. Came across several that had sap running out of wounds and running hard. Found a sapling about 5 inches in diameter that was just recently cut with a saw that was completely soaked. Kind of surprised me a little.

Were the buds open? Sap will bleed from wounds until bacteria closes them, but the sap might not be fit for syrup.

My sugar maple buds are still pretty tight too. But just had 4 days of of good hi and low temps and nary a drop. Tapholes must be drier than Grandma Moses. Sooo tempting to sink some more taps for just one more boil...must resist... :-|
